Allegheny General Hospital has been recognized by leading healthcare industry analysts as one of the nation’s premier hospitals for orthopedic surgery and AGH’s orthopedic program is ranked among the nation’s best for its quality of care. In this project, IKM designed the renovation of one floor, 50,000 square feet, of the Federal North building to accommodate Allegheny Orthopaedic Associates and the Human Motion Center to create the Orthopedic Center at Allegheny General.

The Orthopedic Center features forty-six new exam rooms and forty offices providing the necessary space for a program that offers a comprehensive set of services devoted specifically to restoring and maintaining the musculoskeletal system. The numerous exam rooms were arranged in an organized pod scheme designated by color finishes to provide a ‘built-in’ wayfindng system for patients.  The space also includes a physical therapy “gym” with adjacent shower rooms, several procedure rooms, four x-ray suites with separate waiting, five staff lounges and a welcoming lobby.

The lobby features higher end finishes with cherry wood paneling, decorative wall covering and stone-like tile flooring.

The project also created a new entrance for ambulance drop-off from the street and included a waiting area for special needs patients as well as an adjacent children’s waiting area. One pod provides larger exam rooms to accommodate patients delivered by ambulance on stretchers.

Overall, the project has been considered a complete success. The space enabled the hospital to combine all of the orthopedic care programs in one location, on one floor providing more convenient delivery of services for patients and staff alike. In addition, the project was delivered under budget.
