As one of the 13 different sites to be renovated, the design challenge with the WPAON Jefferson site was to blend the technical requirements of the medical center with the building owner’s model without losing site of staff efficiencies and patient comfort. IKM architects were called upon because of their knowledge-base of healthcare design.

The West Penn Allegheny Health System (WPAHS) in conjunction with a physician run network of medical oncology practice sites...

jointly determined that an alternate business arrangement would be beneficial. The agreement involved conversion of 13 physician practice sites to hospital owned provider based.  Conversion to provider based places the practice sites under the review and auspices of the Pennsylvania Department of Health Division of Acute and Ambulatory Care.  This includes the administrative and operational protocols as well as physical requirements associated with the special organizations of the sites.

As a result of this operational change, IKM was retained to conduct a review and analysis of each of the 13 WPAON sites for compliance and aesthetic upgrades.  IKM met with the end users to understand how to best serve patients and practitioners.

IKM’s goal was to make as comfortable an environment as possible throughout, from the waiting room through the infusion room. The design for the new oncology outpatient clinic at the Jefferson Medical Office Building provides waiting area, nurses’ station, and infusion room with nine treatment chairs. The waiting area features a contemporary partition system to meet the building owner’s requirements. New finishes throughout the facility provide an updated, more contemporary look. The interior design is soft, warm and welcoming; there is a sense of hospitality to the design.

This 5,000 square foot renovation/fit-out was designed and built as one of many such facilities in the WPAON network in an effort to improve access to cancer treatment.
